The keynote speaker was W. Walter Menninger, M.D., Chair of
the Board of Visitors of the Menninger-Baylor College of Medicine-The
Methodist Hospital Foundation. His speech, A Psychiatric Perspective of
Medical History, recalled the development of the psychiatric specialty.
Richard Munich, M.D., Chief of Staff and Medical Director, the Menninger
Clinic, and Vice Chair, Clinical Services, Menninger Department of
Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Baylor College of Medicine, spoke as
well. His lecture, Clinical Services at the Menninger Clinic,
focused primarily on what services the Menninger Clinic currently provides.
Finally, Elizabeth K. Eaton, Ph.D. Executive Director of the HAM-TMC
Library and Elizabeth Borst White, Associate Director of the John P.
McGovern Historical Research Center, discussed the gift of the Menninger
Library to the HAM-TMC Library in June of 2003. They presented an
entertaining slide show, illustrating the move and highlighting the
extensive treasures of The Menninger Collection on Psychiatry and
Psychoanalysis, one of the premiere collections of books, papers and
journals in these disciplines in the world. The Menninger Clinic relocated
from Topeka, KS to Houston in July of 2003. The web cast of the Library
Conference is now available at: http://library.tmc.edu/
The Conference was held in conjunction with the exhibit
Depression: More Than Just the Blues, on loan from the John P.
McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science, which will be on display in
the HAM-TMC Library through June 2004. Books on depression along with items
from the Menninger collection are also on display in the Library. We invite
you to stop by the Library to see this wonderful exhibit.
