Goal 1: Recruitment, Membership and Leadership in the Profession
A contribution of $500 was made to the Harriett Steuernagel Memorial Fund in fiscal year 2005-2006 bringing the ending balance of the fund to $10,775. An annual award was established to promote membership and leadership in the section and the profession in 2003. No award has been made since the first one in 2004, and no nominations have been received to date for 2007. The section will address possible alternative use of the Steuernagel funds at their annual business meeting.
Section elections were held in February. The following new officers were elected:
• Program Chair / Chair Elect: William Dobkowski, Temple University School of Dentistry
• Section Council Representative – Elect: Jan Cox, AHIP Indiana University School of Dentistry Library
• Candidate for the MLA Nominating Committee Election: Dolores Judkins, AHIP Oregon Health & Science University
Goal 2: Life Long Learning
Program Chair Mike Kronenfeld successfully solicited $500 from Stat!Ref to support an invited speaker session related to Evidence Based Practice. The program for the 2007 annual meeting is titled Evidence at the Point of Care – Where ‘the rubber meets the road’. It was planned in cooperation with the Pharmacy and Drug Information Section, the Research Section, the Health Association Libraries Section, and the Clinical Librarian/Evidence-based Health Care SIG. The program will have two invited speakers: Heiko Spallek, DMD, Ph.D., Asst. Professor, Center for Dental Informatics, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pittsburgh and Sarah Spinler, Pharm.D. Program Chair, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences. This program will be held Monday, May 21, 10:30 a.m.–noon. It is hoped that the success of this program will prompt Stat!Ref to commite to annual support of an invited speaker session on this topic.
Mike also worked with multiple other sections (Clinical Librarians and Evidence-Based Health Care Sig; Educational Media and Technologies Section; Health Association Librarians Section; Mental Health Sig; Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section; and the Medical Library Education Section) to offer the contributed paper section: Turning Clinical Students into Evidence-Based Clinicians – the Medical Library’s Role.
