The Harriet L. Steuernagel Award is presented by
the Dental Section of the Medical Library Association annually
to acknowledge, encourage and reward new members of the Dental
Section. This award is presented to a health sciences librarian
who has joined the Dental Section within the last five years and
who has contributed to the growth and development of the Dental
Section through professional activities or service to the Section,
the MLA, the librarian's home institution or library, dental education,
or the dental profession.

served as Washington University School of Dentistry's dental librarian
for fifty years having joined the staff in 1946. Harriet also
was very active in the Medical Library Association, the Special
Libraries Association, and the American Association of Dental
Schools. Washington University School of Dentistry recognized
Harriet's many contributions to the School of Dentistry by naming
their Library the Harriet L. Steuernagel Library in 1989.

librarian--working for Washington University in a volunteer capacity
after her official retirement in 1981. She received many awards
from Washington University, the Greater St. Louis Dental Society,
the Special Libraries Association, and the International College
of Dentists. She was named a Fellow of the Medical Library Association
in 1995.

and professionalism will continue to welcome and encourage new
Dental Section librarians.
