PANEL DISCUSSION:
"Medical Ethics, Eugenics, and the Holocaust"
Wednesday, September 29, 2010, 3:00-5:00UT Medical School Auditorium, MSB 3.001. Enter the UT Medical School Building via the east (Webber Plaza) entrance. The auditorium is located on the 3rd floor between the yellow and green elevators.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Thomas R. Cole, McGovern Chair in Medical Humanities and Director of the John P. McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.
Rabbi Samuel E. Karff became Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Beth Israel in May 1999 after serving his congregation for twenty-four years as Senior Rabbi. He is presently Associate Director of the John P. McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics and Visiting Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at the Texas Medical Center.
Daniel Cardinal DiNardo is the second and current Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, having previously served as Bishop of Sioux City from 1998 to 2004. He is the first cardinal archbishop from a diocese in the Southern United States.
Dr. Sheldon Rubenfeld is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and is a Fellow in both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Rubenfeld has taught "Healing by Killing: Medicine During the Third Reich" for three years and "Jewish Medical Ethics" for seven years at Baylor College of Medicine. He created a six-month program about Medicine and the Holocaust at Holocaust Museum Houston, including an exhibit entitled How Healing Becomes Killing: Eugenics, Euthanasia, Extermination and a series of lectures by distinguished speakers entitled "The Michael E. DeBakey Medical Ethics Lecture Series".

Dr. Tomoko Steen will present "Clinical, Ethical, and Genetic Implications of Two Atomic Bombs and Beyond,"
Dr. Tomoko Steen (Ph.D, Cornell) is Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University and Research Specialist at The Library of Congress, Science, Technology and Business Division. Steen specializes in genome, pharmaco-genetics, epidemiology, molecular evolution, women in science, brain science, alternative medicine, and Japanese science and technology.

The HAM-TMC Library will host the official opening of the exhibit with a brief talk and book signing by Dr. Sheldon Rubenfeld, author of Medicine after the Holocaust: from the master race to the human genome and beyond.
Dr. Rubenfeld is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and is a Fellow in both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. His scientific articles have been published in many medical journals, he is a member of numerous professional medical societies, and he pioneered the use of fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid in Texas.
Dr. Rubenfeld has taught "Healing by Killing: Medicine During the Third Reich" for three years and "Jewish Medical Ethics" for seven years at Baylor College of Medicine. He created a six-month program about Medicine and the Holocaust at Holocaust Museum Houston, including an exhibit entitled How Healing Becomes Killing: Eugenics, Euthanasia, Extermination and a series of lectures by distinguished speakers entitled "The Michael E. John Lienhard will present "Reflections Upon Galatea," a discussion of the literature of Eugenics. Refreshments will be served.
John Lienhard, lauded author, engineer, and award-winning narrator of the public radio segment "The Engines of Our Ingenuity," is an M.D. Anderson professor emeritus of mechanical engineering and history at the University of Houston. Since 1988, he has written and hosted over 2,600 episodes of “Engines,” which is produced by KUHF-FM, the University of Houston’s public radio station. Using the medium of history, the program celebrates creativity and invention and shows how they shape culture and technology.
