The Gazetteer of Texas Physicians is a database that provides references to obituaries, biographical information and archival resources for nearly 11,000 deceased Texas physicians. Currently, it is accessible only in the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center.
Biographical information, obituaries, and portraits for Texas physicians can be found in many regional scientific or medical journals, in biographical directories, and in archival collections. Historians and genealogists often need help in locating information on individual physicians and in using medical literature and archival documentation. The Gazetteer is an efficient tool for access to this information by providing needed references and a guide to documents and photographs in the archive collections of the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center.
Because of the choices made for priorities in indexing and data entry there is a current, temporary bias for physicians from Dallas County and for those who died before 1990. The database contains information drawn from the Dallas Medical Journal (1920 - 1990), The Texas State Journal of Medicine (1905 - 1956), and the licensure records in the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners Collection.
The Gazetteer was developed by the staff of the McGovern Research Center, using Access software. Indexing of additional journal volumes and entry of further information from the archival collections will continue over the next several years.
Further information is available by contacting a staff member in the McGovern Research Center ( 713.799.7135 or 713.799.7145 or bethw@library.tmc.edu). Any search requested will include the database and a manual search of the several appropriate directories.
