ABCs of DNA: Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers

Consumers need access to information about genetics in a manner that is understandable. Librarians working with the public need to be aware of the issues surrounding genetics to better assist patrons in locating and evaluating sometimes complex and confusing information. This class explores basic concepts such as genes and chromosomes and offers an overview of genetic disorders, genetic testing, genetic counseling, and the Human Genome Project. Ethical and legal issues associated with genetic disorders will be covered with regard to privacy, discrimination, and potential legislative impact on medicine and society. A variety of reliable health information resources will be demonstrated, including, but not limited to: Genetics Home Reference, ClinicalTrials.gov, NORD (National Organization for Rare Disorders), and MedlinePlus. The HTML (web) page that attendees create will contain text, images, and hypertext links. An Internet Browser (Internet Explorer) will be used to view the page. Information on Internet resources for web page construction, on locating graphic files, and on loading pages onto servers will be provided. The first 15 minutes of this workshop reviews styles, primary and secondary sources, in-text citation, and useful tools to use when listing references. This hands-on course focuses on the advanced search features of web search engines and the cutting edge of searching. Participants will use various search engines, compare the features and utility of each and develop search strategies that will increase the precision and scope of their searching. The class includes: discussions of web search engines, indexes and hybrids of the two, commercialism and how it influences searching, finding current events information with search engines, specialized databases for special needs and topics suggested by the participants. Easy-to-Read Health and Wellness Material for Consumers: recognizing it, finding it, writing it, rewriting it (Taught by the NN/LM SCR)

Learn in a hands-on environment--in the large group and break-out groups, to critique, rewrite and create materials that get your health and wellness information across quickly and clearly. We'll review the disconnect between information providers and information seekers, the process of educating adults, the success of "plain language" initiatives and the importance of text, type, graphics, space and layout. In this workshop you will also be provided brochure examples, SMOG and REALM tests, a webliography and links to other training. Bring some pieces you use or some information you need to be written in an easy-to-read manner. During the workshop you will edit or develop a piece of your own so you'll have new awareness, new skills, a new product and access to further resources.
