SciFinder Scholar Access

From time to time lately, and in the near future, users of SciFinder Scholar may have experienced or may be experiencing more frequent access problems. This is due to the fact that SciFinder's publisher is converting this resource to a Web-based version. There may be interruptions in access. Please feel free to report the problem, but the only remedy we can offer is the advice to try again later. We and the publisher appreciate your patience during the transition. Currently, we have no information on how soon access will become stable again.

Psychiatry Online's May Book of the Month

Clinical Manual for Assessment and Treatment of Suicidal Patients is the Book of the Month for Psychiatry Online in May.

In this manual the authors, John A. Chiles, M.D. and Kirk D. Strohsahl, Ph.D., "...challenge one of the chief underlying assumptions of traditional approaches to suicide assessment and treatment--that suicidal behavior can be predicted and controlled. In its place, they propose a new conceptualization of suicidality--as learned, reinforced problem-solving behaviors that an individual uses when all other options seem to have failed... The assumption is that a patient's suicidal behavior represents his or her best attempt at that moment in time to deal with life's difficulties. The clinician's initial task is therefore not to judge or criticize but rather to... help the patient begin to explore other ways of dealing with the overwhelming troubles. Efforts to reduce suicidal risk are accomplished by techniques that maximize individual autonomy and encourage positive behaviors..."

This free downloadable guide is available to all Educational level users, and is also useful for practitioners of nursing, social work, psychology and therapy.

J. Travis Gossey, M.D., instructor at Baylor College of Medicine, said attending physicians and residents have found the bedside help for research information very time-efficient.
