Psychiatry Online's May Book of the Month

Clinical Manual for Assessment and Treatment of Suicidal Patients is the Book of the Month for Psychiatry Online in May.

In this manual the authors, John A. Chiles, M.D. and Kirk D. Strohsahl, Ph.D., "...challenge one of the chief underlying assumptions of traditional approaches to suicide assessment and treatment--that suicidal behavior can be predicted and controlled. In its place, they propose a new conceptualization of suicidality--as learned, reinforced problem-solving behaviors that an individual uses when all other options seem to have failed... The assumption is that a patient's suicidal behavior represents his or her best attempt at that moment in time to deal with life's difficulties. The clinician's initial task is therefore not to judge or criticize but rather to... help the patient begin to explore other ways of dealing with the overwhelming troubles. Efforts to reduce suicidal risk are accomplished by techniques that maximize individual autonomy and encourage positive behaviors..."

This free downloadable guide is available to all Educational level users, and is also useful for practitioners of nursing, social work, psychology and therapy.

PubMed Problem Alerts, for Those Who Sign Up

Relayed by the NN/LM SCR:

NLM now provides an e-mail notification service, PubMed Alerts, that will notify subscribers of major system problems with PubMed; its two companion databases, MeSH and Journals; and the NLM Catalog. If these databases have a significant service disruption affecting all or most users for a considerable amount of time, an alert will be issued. Alerts providing update and resolution information about a problem will be sent if warranted. This is an announcement-only e-mail notification service that will be most useful for heavy users of PubMed. (It does not include other services/databases, e.g., LinkOut, PubMed Central.) Alerts will be sent out by NLM Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Time (except Federal holidays).

To subscribe, send an e-mail to pubmed-alerts. Leave the subject line blank and enter "SUBSCRIBE pubmed-alerts [your name in the body of the message]", e.g., "SUBSCRIBE pubmed-alerts jane doe".
