The TMC Library Gift Acceptance Policy

The TMC Library solicits and accepts gifts that are consistent with the Library’s mission and that support core programs or special projects. Financial donations and other forms of gifts will be accepted from individuals, partnerships, corporations, foundations, government agencies or other entities. Types of donations accepted:

  • Monetary donations via cash, check or credit/debit card (the Library accepts Master Card, Visa, American Express and Discover)
  • Mutual fund shares
  • Stocks and securities
  • Annuities
  • Bequests
  • Life insurance
  • Distributions from retirement plans
  • Books and journals
  • Tangible personal property and artifacts may be considered

All donors must sign a deed of gift transferring all ownership rights (including any copyright) to The TMC Library. The type of donation will be included on the deed of gift. The donor should provide list of donated books, journals, tangible property or artifacts The deed of gift includes the stipulation that the Library becomes the owner of the donation or other forms of gifts and, as such, reserves the right to determine its retention, maintenance, location and availability.

Books and journals are treated as new acquisitions and are evaluated by the same standards applied to new purchases to safeguard the quality, consistency and relevance to the Library’s healthcare collection.

Donations and gifts are tax deductible.

Appraisals are solely the responsibility of the donor. The Library cannot and will not make any appraisal or estimate of the value of any gift. The Library cannot and will not provide any advice related to tax deductibility of any donation.

The IRS requires donors to submit Form 8283 for gifts of property valued at more than $500 (single or in the aggregate) for which a charitable deduction is sought. For items valued at more than $5,000 the IRS requires that Qualified Appraisals be obtained if the donor wishes to take a tax deduction for the value of the gift. The Controller of the Library will sign the appropriate tax form if the form is submitted at the time of the donation.
